Ashtar Sheran a poem about Nana

The Mirror and the Mask

Nana stood by the window, watching the evening settle soft and golden. She had just finished speaking her truth and she knew some would not like it.

Far away, across the digital waves, a figure wore a mask of horse and horn, shouting loud enough to shake screens. “Look at me!” it cried. “I hold the picture! I know the way!”

But the goblins behind it shifted restlessly. They knew the difference between a performance and a path. They knew that when you must shout to be seen, and wear a mask to be heard you have already lost your way.

Nana did not shout. She simply lit a candle. “Let them show their shadows,” she whispered. “My light does not need to compete.”

Slowly, gently, those who were ready turned away from the noise. They saw the candle. They saw the woman who stood unmasked, whole, and real. They did not need a picture to know truth they felt it in their bones.

The masked figure raged on, but its crowd grew thin. For you cannot feed on what is not yours to give. And you cannot keep what you did not earn.

Nana smiled. “Be patient,” she said to the quiet room. “What is real does not need to chase anyone. It simply is.” ✨
